![]() ![]() ![]() Central to this discussion is the labeling of music as Melayu, a term that refers to “ a confusing variety of configurations of human beings, locations, languages, customs, states and objects” (Barnard and Maier 2004: ix). During 1950-1965, these urban centers were the principal loci for the composition, performance, and circulation of orkes Melayu music in Indonesia. I will discuss orkes Melayu in three urban centers of Indonesia: Medan, Jakarta, and Surabaya. (“ Malay orchestra”), a genre of Malay-language songs accompanied by an ensemble of mostly Western instruments. The object of my analysis is orkes Melayu In this article, my aim is to illuminate the cultural ideas, aesthetic practices, and social meanings of “ Melayu” in urban popular music of Indonesia during the period 1950 to 1965.
